XXI World Congress on Safety and Health at Work
3 - 6 September 2017, Singapore

The World Congress is the world biggest gathering of OSH experts and practitioners. It takes place every three years – each year a different country is the host.

XXI World Congress in Singapore was organised jointly by the Ministry of Manpower of Singapore, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Social Security Association (ISSA). It gathered about 3,500 representatives from all over the world.

The motto of the congress was “A Global Vision of Prevention” and it addressed three main topics:

• Topic 1: Vision Zero – From vision to reality
  Vision Zero aims to inculcate a mindset that all injuries and ill-health arising from work are preventable. It calls for a paradigm shift at every level of an organisation, from one of fault-finding, to one that focuses on finding solutions to prevent injuries and ill-health.
  
  

• Topic 2: Healthy work – Healthy Life
  Our future World of Work is becoming more challenging, complex and fast-paced. To improve employees’ health, a comprehensive and integrated approach to workers’ safety and health is needed. Employees and employers should work together continuously to sustain, protect and promote each other’s safety and health in the workplace.
  
  

• Topic 3: People-centred prevention
  To build inclusive workplaces it is important to take issues such as demographic changes, ageing, gender, culture and education into account. Sustainable strategies for the promotion, protection and education of our people are critical.
  
  

Alongside the World Congress the International Media Festival for Prevention (IMFP) took place. It offered an overview of films and multimedia applications on safety and health at work from all over the world. During the Congress selected films and multimedia products were presented by the members of the festival jury. CIOP-PIB delegated one of the jury members. The Short-List of the submissions are available on the site  www.safety2017singapore.com/imfp/.

In response to young worker vulnerability to injury and illness, the ILO was also hosting the SafeYouth@Work Congress  – a parallel programme at the XXI World Congress on Safety and Health at Work – which was an opportunity for young people to bring their voice to the discussion on safety and health in the workplace, and to help build a global network of youth OSH champions.
